Increasing immigration through legal process

Increasing immigration through legal process

Political instability, chronic violence, food insecurity, and lack of economic opportunity are just some of the reasons why immigrants have fled their countries and have taken refuge in another country. The percentage of immigrants around the world has increased from 2.8 percent in 2000 to 3.5 percent in 2019. This substantial increase in migrant stocks worldwide has made migration into a demographic process with growing social and political resonance. One of the Areas where Illegal immigration is a big problem in the US- Mexico border. Mexico has also had the acute problem of immigrants fleeing to the USA legally and illegally. And on the other hand, it also receives a large number of immigrants from the Northern triangle.
The fundamental cause of the border surge is that crossing the border is a far more effective method for Central Americans to enter the United States than using the rest of the U.S immigration system. Mexico has authorized the entry of some asylum seekers from the U.S while they wait for their hearing with the appropriate authorities and the government has upheld and protected the right to asylum.

I believe that the international actors and the U.S should implement various reforms to support the cause of Mexico towards the immigrants.

I also believe that the U.S should grant Humanitarian parole to Central Americans especially in cases where the family is living legally in the U.S.

I think it is also important that we take up the discussion about the implementation of Private refugee sponsorships which allow the resettlement of the refugees and their families.

The U.S should, in my opinion, expand the guest worker program for seasonal workers to year-round jobs. Following along that line it shall also waive the H2B cap for Central Americans.

I further feel that the U.S should process the applications of asylum seekers, refugees, and backlogged green cards, thereby removing the uncertainty from their minds. While the U.S provides asylum, refugee, and healthcare and education facilities to these immigrants, the number of immigrants that are coming into the U.S needs to be curtailed. Therefore, I suggest that the Northern triangle should continue the U.S Backed up plan of alliance, despite the setbacks caused by COVID-19.

The region also needs to make efforts to curtail violence. For this, there should be a call for the International actors/ agencies to ban the criminal gangs, strike on its members, and sources of supply of money and weapons. Furthermore, The local government shall not negotiate with them and give any kind of political legitimacy to such gangs.
Additionally,

The administration should grant parole to immigrants who are still in the northern triangle if:

They have a green card petition approved on their behalf but cannot receive a visa due to quotas or if they have a close relative with legal status in the US.

New applicants for green cards from the northern triangle have to wait up to 65 years, causing many of them to cross the border illegally. That's why immigrants would benefit from humanitarian Poles. These immigrants should be granted parole, allowing them to relocate immediately to the U.S and it should keep the Program open to future green card applicants. This would give more immigrants the incentive to apply through legal channels rather than the illegal ones.

This would also decrease the cost of monitoring the border.

A broader parole program should be initiated to reunify families for those who have relatives in the US who hold a legal status.

Reuniting Central Americans with legal U.S family members.

Refugees also need immediate attention. A private sponsorship program should be started. Sponsors would show that they have the resources to fund the refugees initial resettlement.

The state should make it possible for refugees to apply directly to the program and then private actors like family members, non profit organizations and churches, could decide which refugees they want to sponsor.

Guest worker programs which have helped control illegal immigration from Mexico should also be started up for Central America like the de facto worker program.

U.S shall design new worker programs, bring change to several existing rules and give incentive for U.S recruiters to set up in Central America.

For Guatemala Us employers shall set up to hire agricultural workers even in non seasonal or temporary positions.

For El Salvador, the U.S should permit non agriculture workers to enter and work.

Congress should grant permanent legal status to the current illegal and asylum seeking population which will clear the immigration court backlogs, prevent asylum seekers from becoming illegal immigrants and allow families of the legalized immigrants to reunite. So basically the word illegal should be removed from the people who are already there.

Legalization could draw more people to come to the border on the belief that they might get legalized. This is why the government should pair legalization with an expansion of legal immigration.
