THW allows children to sue their parents for religious indoctrination

Hello everyone. Today, I will be writing against this motion i.e THW allows children to sue their parents for religious indoctrination. This is just my side of the argument that I wanted to put forward for discussion and I am in no way forcing my thoughts about this topic on anyone.

I would first like to define the important terms in this motion. Religious Indoctrination refers to a process of imparting doctrine in an authoritative way. Secondly, Children refer to minors under the age of 16 and suing is taking complicated legal action against a person.

First, I would like to state that I in no way supports religious indoctrination and the opposition believes that they should be given some sort of help. But we need to acknowledge the fact that Children or Minors are too young and naive to make their own decisions. People don’t acknowledge how suing is a long complicated process that involves a lot of legal paperwork, time, energy, money, and effort. Plus, taking legal action can be overwhelming and the child will for most of the part be alone? providing mental health counseling seems like a solution but even with mental health counseling after suing but there have been cases where people, especially the younger ones have committed suicide or have caused themselves harm. Also, who will give them the due support to go through this process? And who will help them mentally to cope up with the problems they are facing after the process of suing is over? Also, an important question I will address later is where do we draw the line and till what length will the children sue?

I would like to propose a refined or better working model,

  • Special platforms should be established where people who are victims of religious indoctrination can reach out for mental health counseling and therapy.
  • On these platforms, they can also talk to other victims of indoctrination and how it affected their lives.
  • We will also (for children facing extreme discomfort) try and hold sessions for the parents trying to get them to acknowledge and own up to their mistakes.
  • They will also be informed of actions that can be taken against them in case they continue on these paths.
  • Children who any time feel uncomfortable can reach out to other trusted ones who then if necessary only in extreme cases can take legal action.
The reason why I believe that children shouldn’t be allowed to sue is that suing itself is a very complicated and lengthy process involving a lot of difficult decisions. Also, the question I wanted to address was to what lengths will they go? Will they sue for money? For separation? For emancipation? If they are suing for money how is it helpful because parents who are involved in religious indoctrination don’t just stop like that? Where will we draw the line? It is better that these children reach out for help, talk about their issues and exercise their right to freedom when they are older without letting this trauma come up again.

Secondly, It is very likely that when a child is involved in a process like suing they can be exploited at many stages. By the lawyers, Parents, and other stakeholders involved. This will just lead to the child being more confused and feeling lonelier and probably ends up leaving them used and nothing to gain.
