National Security could be more important than Data Privacy Laws
Data Privacy Laws are more important than National Security
Good morning everyone! Today, I wanted to go against this motion i.e National Security could be more important than Data Privacy Laws. This is just my side of the argument that I wanted to put forward for discussion and I am in no way forcing my thoughts about this topic on anyone. We need to realize that privacy is a natural right. Lack of privacy has a chilling effect on original thought and experimentation. If I knew that the government could monitor each and every step of mine then I am less likely to express my dissents. And this goes against the very backbone of democracy.
Secondly, surveillance of the people will lead to asymmetric privacy, where the rich and mighty would still be able to maintain privacy but the activities of the masses will be surveilled. This asymmetry will keep the actions of rich and mighty opaque whereas actions of masses will be subjected to minute scrutiny.
Furthermore, to establish why Data Privacy laws are more important than National Security, the fact remains that we are overvaluing the threat of terrorism. Consequently, Surveilling for abnormalities that represent threats is fine, but when the line is crossed into constant nonconsensual data mining, I begin to disagree. The phrase “in the interest of national security ” is extremely ambiguous and a perfect line dividing what is to protect national security and people’s personal right to privacy does not exist. Therefore, it is very easy to cross limits of data privacy in the word of national security, especially by the government. A government spying on citizens may instil fear and lose legitimacy.
Also, If Someone is going to be monitoring me to have online security I need it to be done by someone trustworthy. But there have been incidents where the government has not proven to be trustworthy in this matter like my fellow speaker brought up. A vivid and ongoing example of this is the Pegasus controversy in India where the government has been alleged of using the Pegasus spyware on opposition leaders and Election commissioners.
It's important to note that the violation of privacy should be an exception and not a rule. It is important that we establish laws to make sure that data privacy is not breached and openly violated in the name of national security.
Thus I will end by saying that this makes it clear enough that the establishment of Data privacy laws is more important than National security.
Well researched !!
